Starting a screen printing business at home isn't just about building a brand, it's

about creating opportunity within a community. For many entrepreneurs looking into how to start a screen printing business, the journey begins with a desire for independence and local impact.

Founder Pamela Menaes runs her custom screen printing shop in Kitigan Zibi, an Algonquin community of about 1,400 people located 120 kilometers north of Ottawa. Like many Indigenous communities, there are real barriers to opportunity. Education often requires leaving home after grade 11, which can bring financial strain, culture shock, and a lack of support systems. For many, that path simply isn't realistic, and too often people return feeling like they've failed.

Pamela is working to change that narrative by building a successful home-based screen printing business.

Through her screen printing shop setup, she's creating a space where people can learn hands-on skills, express creativity, and build something of their own without leaving the community.

This is especially important as more youth in the community identify as neurodivergent, or as Pamela calls it, "neurospicy." Traditional education paths don't always serve them well, but trades, creative work, and learning the screen printing process can unlock confidence and real potential.

It also becomes a platform for cultural expression, turning language and identity into wearable art that people can share. As Pamela notes,

"Algonquin is the language from our community. We've lost our language over the years but we're trying to revitalize that right now and screen printing is also a really awesome place for us to be able to do that."

Why Bringing Screen Printing Production In-House Mattered

Like many growing custom apparel shops, Diamond Phoenix Creations used to rely on outsourcing. That meant juggling timelines, dealing with minimums, and sometimes sacrificing quality or margins.

"You have no control over timelines… and it cuts into your profit," Pamela explains. Outsourcing to Ottawa or other local shops became a logistical nightmare. If a product came in with poor quality or corners were cut, tight deadlines meant there was no time to send it back.

Bringing production in-house changed that. It gave Pamela full control over quality and turnaround times, while also creating the ability to keep work, skills, and jobs inside the community. For anyone researching screen printing shop equipment for a startup, making the leap to in-house production is a game-changer.

The Solution: The ROQ E Automatic Screen Printing Press

Equipment decisions played a major role in this transition. When it came time to upgrade, Pamela chose the ROQ E Automatic Screen Printing Press—a revolutionary machine that solved several critical problems for her growing business.

The ROQ E is the first-ever self-contained automatic screen printing press. Its defining feature is that it requires only a standard electric connection to operate, eliminating the need for an external air compressor.

Problems the ROQ E Solved for Diamond Phoenix Creations

Eliminating the External Air Compressor: A traditional automatic press requires a separate external air compressor — another piece of equipment to purchase, learn, maintain, and teach others to use. The ROQ E's built-in compressor eliminated that extra variable entirely. "When they said it was built into the machine, I was like, you know what, I would prefer that over the other one," Pamela says.

Shop Space and Noise Reduction: With the built-in compressor, there is no additional machine taking up valuable floor space. The ultra-quiet air supply also addressed a real concern Pamela had about noise levels in an already busy workspace. "I'm glad I did because it's not very loud. It's really quiet. And I was really nervous about that."

Regaining Profit Margins: Outsourcing came with minimums that forced her to find workarounds — often more labor-intensive methods done in-house — which ate directly into profit margins. The ROQ E removed that constraint, giving her full control over run sizes and keeping those profits in the business.

Industrial Output with Simple Setup: The ROQ E delivers up to 900 indexes per hour with up to 8 colors, providing industrial-level output without the complex overhead of a traditional automatic press setup.

A True Partner in Print

Making the move to start screen printing at home with industrial equipment came with real uncertainty. Being far from major service hubs, Pamela's biggest concern was support. What happens if something breaks? What if you don't know what you're doing?

ROQ approached it as a partnership from the start.

Over the course of three years, their team stayed in touch, checking in regularly and building a relationship long before the screen printing equipment ever arrived. When it finally came time to install and train, that support continued.

Zach was the on-site ROQ technician helping guide the process, troubleshoot, and answer questions in real time.

His technical expertise helped ease a lot of the initial anxiety. At the same time, it wasn't just one person. The broader ROQ team stayed engaged throughout, making sure that if one person didn't have an answer, someone else did, and that communication never dropped.

"They didn't just take my money and let me fly alone," Pamela says.

That consistency, from early conversations through install and beyond, made it feel like a true partnership, not just a purchase.

"My partner in print for me means that if I'm having trouble with my prints, I'm going to feel free to reach out to ROQ and say, hey, I need some help, and they're going to be there. You can sell me a machine, but if I'm not successful, then you're not successful."
