Andy Johnson: The TOM FORD Plastic Innovation Prize, spearheaded by Lonely Whale in collaboration with TOM FORD, recognizes companies dedicated to combatting thin film plastic pollution. This initiative aims to find sustainable solutions to a complex global problem. Thin film plastic constitutes about 46% of ocean pollution and poses a significant threat to marine and terrestrial ecosystems. While technically biodegradable, petroleum-based plastics degrade over thousands of years, breaking down into harmful microplastics. Sustainable feedstocks are crucial in producing eco-friendly plastics that biodegrade rapidly, are carbon cycle impact conscious, and do not compete with vital resources like food and water.
The Prize, featuring 26 innovative companies, sets strict criteria for solutions that biodegrade in various environments, including oceans. The winning solutions balance rapid degradation with shelf stability, social responsibility, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
